On March 8, the Earle Mack School of Law hosted an event organized by Citizens for a No Kill Philadelphia, a non-profit group in favor of no-kill animal shelters in the city. The event was co-sponored by the Earle Mack School of Law Student Animal Legal Defense Fund.
Speakers included Ledy VanKavage, attorney and senior legislative analyst for Best Friends Animal Society and vice-chair of the American Bar Association’s Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section Animal Law Committee, and Leigh Siegrfried, certified professional dog trainer and owner of Opportunity Barks - Behavior Training.
Highlighting recent incidents involving pit bulls injuring residents of Philadelphia, and a call from some in the community for breed-specific legislation that would make it illegal to own pit bulls, the speakers discussed the proposed legislation, responsible dog ownership, and animal law in general.
